When Should My Child Have Their First Dental Checkup?

At Dentistry for Children, Dr. Clark strongly believes in preventive care and teaching children the importance of proper oral hygiene habits early on. We recommend taking your baby to the dentist for their first visit around the age of one.The first tooth usually begins to erupt between 6 and 12 months. Dr. Clark can evaluate your child’s teeth and gums and provide preventive treatments, such as fluoride and sealants, to help protect their teeth from cavities. She can also offer advice on diet and nutrition to ensure your baby has healthy teeth and gums.

What Can I Do to Prepare My Child for Their First Dental Visit?

The most important thing you can do to prepare your baby for their first dental visit is to be positive and relaxed. Talk about the visit excitedly and positively – it’s like going to the doctor for a checkup. Try to use words that are not scary so that your child doesn’t have unnecessary anxiety. On the first visit, we will show your child all of our tools and “count” your child’s teeth and clean them with our “special toothbrush.” We recommend reading positive books about going to the dentist or role playing with a stuffed animal to help them get prepared. We will take our time to ensure your child feels comfortable and safe.

Dr. Clark will then discuss any further treatment that may be necessary and provide information about how to keep your baby’s smile healthy.
